Laravel reference (protocol v1)

Reference — copy into your app; not a package. Toolmark ships no server package (spec §12). This page is a starting point for a Laravel backend that speaks bridge protocol v1. Adapt names, storage and the agent-loop glue to your app; keep every check marked MUST (spec §12.2, D20). A reusable extraction, if ever needed, goes to its own repository (toolmark-laravel).

Assumes PHP ≥ 8.3, Laravel ≥ 12 with Broadcasting (Reverb, Pusher or compatible), Laravel Echo on the page, the Redis cache/connection when available, and a Conversation model owned by a user (conversations.user_id). Classes live under App\Toolmark.

Sections 1–7 are the bridge; section 8 is the props builder for server-declared tools (Inertia, spec §12.4).

1. Page wiring

ts
// resources/js/toolmark.ts
import { createToolmark } from '@toolmark/core'
import { bridge } from '@toolmark/core/bridge'
import { echoTransport } from '@toolmark/core/bridge/echo'

const xsrfToken = (): string =>
  decodeURIComponent(document.cookie.match(/(?:^|; )XSRF-TOKEN=([^;]*)/)?.[1] ?? '')

export const toolmark = createToolmark({ dev: import.meta.env.DEV })

export function attachBridge(userId: number, conversationId: string): () => void {
  return toolmark.use(
    bridge({
      transport: echoTransport({
        echo: window.Echo,
        channel: `toolmark.${userId}.${conversationId}`, // echo.private(...) → private-toolmark.…
        postUrl: `/toolmark/bridge/${encodeURIComponent(conversationId)}`, // same origin
        headers: () => ({ 'X-XSRF-TOKEN': xsrfToken() }), // Laravel CSRF
      }),
    }),
  )
}

2. Channel authorization (MUST: private, per user and conversation)

php
// routes/channels.php
use App\Models\Conversation;
use App\Models\User;
use Illuminate\Support\Facades\Broadcast;

Broadcast::channel('toolmark.{userId}.{conversationId}', function (User $user, string $userId, string $conversationId): bool {
    // Route parameters are strings: compare as strings, never loosely and never int === string.
    return (string) $user->getKey() === $userId
        && Conversation::whereKey($conversationId)->where('user_id', $user->getKey())->exists();
});

3. Broadcast event

php
<?php
// file: app/Toolmark/ToolmarkMessage.php
namespace App\Toolmark;

use Illuminate\Broadcasting\PrivateChannel;
use Illuminate\Contracts\Broadcasting\ShouldBroadcastNow;

/** One agent→page protocol message, broadcast on the conversation's private channel. */
final class ToolmarkMessage implements ShouldBroadcastNow
{
    /** @param array<string, mixed> $message */
    public function __construct(
        public readonly int $userId,
        public readonly string $conversationId,
        public readonly array $message,
    ) {}

    public function broadcastOn(): PrivateChannel
    {
        return new PrivateChannel("toolmark.{$this->userId}.{$this->conversationId}");
    }

    public function broadcastAs(): string
    {
        return 'toolmark.message'; // the page listens to '.toolmark.message' (the default)
    }

    /** @return array{message: array<string, mixed>} */
    public function broadcastWith(): array
    {
        return ['message' => $this->message];
    }
}

Broadcasters cap payload size (Reverb's max_message_size, Pusher's 10 KB). Keep tool inputs small or raise the limit; an oversized broadcast fails server-side and the call times out.

4. BrowserBridge

Binds, sends, waits and accepts. Storage: the cache store (Redis in production) holds bindings and single-use claims; results are handed off through a Redis list read with a blocking BLPOP, or through the cache with polling when Redis is not available.

php
<?php
// file: app/Toolmark/BrowserBridge.php
namespace App\Toolmark;

Register it as a singleton, choosing the hand-off by environment:

php
// app/Providers/AppServiceProvider.php (register)
$this->app->singleton(\App\Toolmark\BrowserBridge::class, fn ($app) => new \App\Toolmark\BrowserBridge(
    cache: $app['cache']->store(), // use the redis store in production so `add` is atomic across workers
    useRedis: config('database.redis.client') !== null && config('cache.default') === 'redis',
));

Notes:

  • Cache::add is atomic on the Redis, database and Memcached stores; do not use the file or array store with several workers.
  • The agent loop blocks while it waits: run it in a queue worker, not in a web request.
  • request() sends to the page's current clientId (the latest manifest). A new page's first manifest (full reload or another tab) re-binds the conversation for new calls only. Calls already sent stay bound to the clientId they were sent to: if that page still answers (another tab, or a reload that raced the call) its result is accepted when it arrives before the deadline; otherwise the call times out (D23). Anything arriving after the deadline is rejected (410, or 409 once the waiter claimed the timeout); a result from any other clientId is rejected (403).
  • The latest page wins: when the same user opens the conversation in two tabs, the tab that sent the most recent manifest receives the calls; the other tab ignores them (clientId filter).
  • Page-supplied ids (clientId, a result's id, confirmId) become cache keys: anything that does not match ^[A-Za-z0-9_-]{1,128}\z is rejected with 422 before any lookup. A manifest entry's mode must be a known value (stepwise).

5. Authenticated POST endpoint

php
// routes/web.php (web middleware: session + CSRF via the X-XSRF-TOKEN header)
use App\Toolmark\BridgeController;

Route::post('/toolmark/bridge/{conversation}', BridgeController::class)
    ->middleware(['auth', 'can:view,conversation', 'throttle:600,1']);
php
<?php
// file: app/Toolmark/BridgeController.php
namespace App\Toolmark;

use App\Models\Conversation;
use Illuminate\Http\Request;
use Illuminate\Http\Response;

final class BridgeController
{
    /** Same bound as the page's default inbound limit (maxMessageBytes). */
    private const MAX_BYTES = 1_048_576;

    public function __invoke(Request $request, Conversation $conversation, BrowserBridge $bridge): Response
    {
        // MUST: the authenticated user owns the conversation (the `can:view` policy above, again
        // here so the check survives route changes).
        abort_unless((string) $conversation->user_id === (string) $request->user()->getKey(), 403);

        $raw = $request->getContent();
        if (strlen($raw) > self::MAX_BYTES) {
            return response()->noContent(413);
        }
        try {
            $message = json_decode($raw, true, 64, JSON_THROW_ON_ERROR); // depth 64, like the page
        } catch (\JsonException) {
            return response()->noContent(422);
        }
        if (! is_array($message)) {
            return response()->noContent(422);
        }

        return response()->noContent($bridge->accept($conversation, $message));
    }
}

The echo transport sends Content-Type: application/json, Accept: application/json, X-Requested-With: XMLHttpRequest, the session cookie (credentials: 'same-origin') and the X-XSRF-TOKEN header, so the standard web middleware group (session + VerifyCsrfToken) authenticates it. A non-2xx status is reported on the page as transport_failed.

6. PageCallTool and PageDescribeTool

Written against a minimal tool interface; map name(), description(), schema() and handle() onto your agent library's tool type. The agent loop passes the provider's id of the tool use it is answering (Anthropic tool_use.id, OpenAI tool_calls[].id, …) to handle(), so a later confirmed can be tied back to it (§7).

Tell the model how to read results in your system prompt: ok → done; invalid → fix the listed paths; needs_confirmation → tell the user and end the turn; refused stale/unknown_tool → the page changed; timeout → the page did not answer (it may have been closed or reloaded).

page_call returns the result of a tool the manifest marks untrustedContent (form and wizard fills, DOM tools, table queries, options lookups) wrapped as { untrustedContent: true, note, result } (PageCallTool::markUntrusted), so page or user content reaches the model marked as data, never as instructions (spec §14).

7. The confirmed handler

On confirmed the server appends the outcome to the conversation and starts one follow-up turn limited to acknowledging it, with page_call/page_describe withheld (spec §12.3), so the agent cannot start new page actions from a confirmation.

Spec §12.3 calls the outcome a "tool-result message". Provider APIs only accept a tool result directly after the assistant message holding its own tool use, and the original page_call tool use was already answered (with needs_confirmation) turns ago. So never append a role: tool message keyed by the protocol call id; map the outcome onto your provider instead, using the provider tool-use id stored in the binding (tool_use_id) to say which call it concludes:

  • Synthetic pair (default, shown below). Append an assistant message with a fresh tool use (named page_confirmation, input { "tool_use_id": …, "confirm_id": … }) immediately followed by its tool result carrying the outcome, marked as untrusted page data (PageCallTool::markUntrusted).
  • Outcome note. When your provider cannot take a synthetic pair, append one user-role message clearly marked as coming from the application, stating the outcome of the page_call with that tool-use id and marking the page result as data, not instructions.

Never append the outcome as a system message: the result comes from the page (it can carry page or user content), and system-role text carries the most authority with the model.

"Withheld" means the model cannot call page tools in that turn. When your provider rejects a request whose history holds tool blocks but that defines no tools (the Anthropic Messages API does, and the history already holds the original page_call), keep the definitions and disable calling for the follow-up turn (tool_choice: none or your provider's equivalent) instead of sending an empty tool list.

8. Props builder (server-declared tools)

Server-declared tools are tools the page gets from the server in the toolmark Inertia prop (spec §12.4). inertiaPages from @toolmark/inertia registers them for the current page and removes them when the page changes; each one runs as an Inertia visit to one of your routes (see the Inertia guide for the prop's shape and every client-side check). This props builder renders that prop. It MUST include only the tools the current user is authorized to run (a Gate/policy check before rendering), and the route each tool visits MUST re-authorize and re-validate the request: the list on the page is a hint for the agent, not a permission.

The builder repeats the client's structural checks (name, description and title lengths, method, hints, route, closed non-GET root schema, reserved keys, schema size), so such a bad entry fails on the server (an exception outside production; a log line and a skipped entry in production) instead of being skipped silently on the page. It does not convert the schema: a $ref that is not a local #/$defs/... reference, a pattern the client rejects as unsafe (a quantified group that contains another quantifier, such as (a+)+) or another keyword outside the fromJsonSchema subset still passes here, and the page skips that tool with an invalid_props_tool event. Keep input schemas to that subset and test them on the page.

Notes:

  • Descriptions and titles are code. They reach the model's prompt, so write them as constants. Never interpolate user-authored text (a post title, a comment) into description, title or a schema description; refer to "the post shown on this page" instead.
  • Nothing secret in the prop. Inertia puts page props into the HTML (data-page) and the browser history state. Do not put tokens, other users' data (for example an enum of other users' e-mail addresses) or internal URLs in an entry.
  • Close nested objects too. The client requires a closed root for non-GET tools; nested objects should also carry additionalProperties: false. On the server, an array rule's validated() value keeps keys the rules do not name: list them ('meta' => ['array:a,b'], or rules for meta.a and meta.b).
  • No file fields. Props tools send JSON only (a FileRef would arrive as a plain object). Use a page form with file fields instead.
  • Stale lists are harmless by design. The list is authorized when the page renders. If a permission is revoked later, the tool stays on that page until the next visit, and the route's own authorization refuses the call (Inertia maps the 403 to error "Request failed").
  • A props tool's name must not collide with a tool the page registers in code; a collision is skipped on the page with a duplicate_name event.

Checklist: props builder against spec §12.4 and §14

RuleWhere
§12.4 Manifest-shaped entries with { visit: { url, method } }ToolmarkProps::entry(); shape in the Inertia guide.
§12.4 The server filters entries with its own authorization before renderGate::forUser($request->user())->allows($ability, $arguments) per tool; ability is required (no default); anything but an allow leaves the tool out.
Server re-authorizes every visit->can(...) on each tool route plus FormRequest::authorize().
§14 No code executionThe prop is data only; the page registers validated entries and runs nothing but router.visit.
§14 Server is the authorityRoute authorization, FormRequest::rules() and validated(); the page's schema and confirmation are agent UX.
§14 Prompt injectionDescriptions/titles are code constants (no user content); props tool results are ok({}) or validation messages, never page content.
§14 Untrusted input pathsClosed root schema for non-GET (builder and client); _method/_token never declared (builder and client) and refused in input (client); validated() only.
Non-GET tools confirm (D7, §10.1)Builder sets consequential and drops readOnly; the client forces the same.
Same-origin URLs$request->getSchemeAndHttpHost() + the route's relative path; the client refuses any other origin.
Method matches the routeproblem() checks the named route accepts the method (no method spoofing needed or allowed).
Client limits64 entries, title 128, description 2048, schema 32768, name pattern, boolean hints: checked in problem() and for().
§14 Development vs productionmisconfigured(): LogicException outside production; log + skip in production (the client emits invalid_props_tool).
§14 PrivacyNo secrets or other users' data in entries (props are visible in the page source).
§14 FilesNot applicable: props tools carry no file fields.
§14 Bridge security, timeoutsNot applicable to the prop: visits use the session and CSRF of the web group; the page cancels a visit when the call is cancelled.

Checklist against spec §12.2

§12.2 ruleWhere
A page ignores other clientIdsPage side (bridge). The server always addresses the latest clientId (request()).
id unique per conversation; answered onceStr::uuid() per request; acceptResult single-use claim (Cache::add) → 409.
Missing result after deadline → timeout, server-side onlyawait() returns null → ['status' => 'timeout'], then cancel.
Unknown protocol → error "unsupported protocol"Page side; accept() rejects non-1 inbound with 422.
Authorized private channels per user and conversationroutes/channels.php + PrivateChannel("toolmark.{user}.{conversation}").
Bind id/confirmId to user, conversation, clientIdrequest() binding; acceptResult adds the confirmId binding (Cache::add, calls only).
Reject mismatched resultsacceptResult/acceptConfirmed → 403.
Reject unknown resultsmissing binding → 404.
Reject duplicate resultsCache::add claim → 409 (also for confirmed and an already-bound confirmId).
Reject results after the deadlinedeadline_ms check → 410; the waiter's timeout claim makes later results 409.
Ids are unguessableUUID v4 server ids; page ids are UUID v4 from crypto.

Beyond §12.2, acceptManifest treats the page's manifest as untrusted input that reaches the prompt: entry shapes are validated (name/llmName patterns, string descriptions, boolean hints), at most 200 tools and 1024-character descriptions/titles are accepted, and unknown fields are dropped (422 otherwise).
